Arthritis Treatment Q & A

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis isn't a single disease, but includes more than 100 different forms of musculoskeletal conditions. Degenerative arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the two most common forms. The first results from joint trauma and wear and tear, and affects both men and women, while rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that is more common in women. Gout is a form of metabolic arthritis. Infectious arthritis results from joint infections caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses. Arthritis treatment can help relieve pain and inflammation.

What Are the Symptoms of Arthritis?

Joint pain is the best-known and most common symptom of arthritis. Pain can occur with movement or at rest and may occur in any joint. Fatigue is often a symptom of arthritis; it may be intrinsic to the disease or the result of disrupted sleep from pain. People who have arthritis often develop decreased range of motion as joints stiffen, and may also have muscle weakness. Occasional flares may occur when symptoms become worse, sometimes for no obvious reason.

What About Arthritis Treatment?

The treatment strategies for arthritis vary according to the form of the disease and the patient's symptoms. In most cases, doctors prescribe pain-relieving medications and anti-inflammatories. Medications called biologics may be used for conditions like rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis. Supportive treatments like massage and physical therapy are helpful for some patients. Exercise helps maintain flexibility and strength but too much can make pain worse. Diet can be important; in gout, for example, eating large amounts of red meat or drinking wine can cause a flare.

Can Patients Participate in Arthritis Treatment?

Self- management strategies are important for people who have arthritis. For example, being overweight or obese increases the stress on joints. Weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight are important self-care strategies. Each patient must learn to balance exercise with rest; too much exercise can increase pain, but too little means joints may stiffen. Many patients find self-massage with ice -- or using heat -- can decrease pain.
