Why is a Well Woman Exam Needed?

A well woman exam is an integral part of planning and prevention. If women wait to see the doctor until they are sick or until they are showing serious symptoms, treatment will always be more challenging. Some serious health problems, including some types of cancer, could potentially be identified early at a well woman exam.

What is Included in a Well Woman Exam?

The contents of the well woman exam can be customized for each woman, but in general this type of exam will include both a physical exam and a pelvic exam. During the physical exam, the patient's overall health will be assessed. This usually includes taking blood pressure, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI,) and having an abdominal palpation. In the pelvic exam, there is both an internal and an external analysis. The doctor will ask about any pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, vaginal discharge, or other reproductive system symptoms that the patient has noticed. The doctor will also typically do screenings for sexually transmitted infections during a well woman exam. The breasts will be checked in a clinical breast examination. For woman over age 40, a mammogram will be planned. Any birth control needs are evaluated during this time, and patients can make changes to their birth control if desired. Women who are taking supplemental hormones will have a hormone evaluation to determine whether they hormones are working the way that they should in the body.

How Often is a Well Woman Exam Needed?

For most people, well woman exams will be scheduled once every year. In cases where a woman has unique health concerns, is a cancer survivor, or has other serious medical issues that require more support, the exams may be needed two times each year or more often. The well woman exam schedule, like the exam, can be customized for the woman.
