What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

When a man becomes sexually excited, the penis swells with blood and becomes erect. Erectile dysfunction occurs when the penis either doesn't become erect at all, or the erection isn't firm enough or doesn't last long enough to complete the sex act and ejaculate (have an orgasm). In some cases, erectile dysfunction can be accompanied by reduced sexual desire, while in others, the man has a normal libido and wants sex, but cannot complete the sex act.

Actually, erectile dysfunction may be an early sign of another health problem. For example, men with diabetes or heart disease may experience erectile dysfunction. Having erection problems may indicate hormonal dysfunction, blood vessel disease, nerve damage or mental health issues. How is Erectile Dysfunction Treated?

The first step in treating erectile dysfunction is to try to determine the cause, as treatments vary depending on the source of the problem. A number of medications are available. Most are available in oral form, but injections are another possibility. One medication comes in suppository form and is placed inside the urethra with a special applicator. Testosterone therapy can help some men; it is available in a variety of forms. Penile pumps, surgery, and implants are other options. Counseling can help with stress, anxiety or depression.
